Bitter cold tonight, and lasting through MLK Day - WVVA TV

Winter is finally here, and in full force. Temperatures this afternoon have struggled to climb out of the 20s, only a few spots have been able to get into the lower 30s. Although temperatures are in the 20s and 30s, the strong northwesterly breeze is making it feel more like the teens outside. Wind chill factors have been mainly in the teens all afternoon, and will plummet overnight. The cold air, combined with an upper-level disturbance have also allowed for a few isolated flurries throughout your Sunday.

Overnight, blustery northwest winds will continue to bring in colder air. Temperatures will fall into the upper single digits and teens. With the strong northwest winds, some wind chill factors will make it feel like the low single digits or below zero degrees. Higher elevations could experience wind chills as low as 15 below zero degrees. Western Greenbrier and Western Pocahontas counties are under a wind chill advisory until Monday at 10 AM because of wind chill factors expected to push between -15 and -10 degrees.

With the lower wind chills overnight, it is very important to cover up as much skin as possible. Especially if you are out at any MLK events for the holiday through Monday. If you have to be outside at all tomorrow, make sure you wear a heavier jacket, cover up your hands, face, and head. The key is to cover up as much skin as possible, especially with the bitter cold.

Even through Monday, strong northwest winds will continue to bring in colder air. Temperatures will once again struggle to get out of the 20s Monday afternoon. Wind chills will be in the upper single digits and teens Monday afternoon, making it feel much colder. Monday will stay mainly dry, but can't rule out a few isolated flurries, with little to no accumulation.

Monday night, mostly clear skies will help temperatures once again fall into the teens, with some of the higher elevations falling into the single digits.

Tuesday will be a little warmer than Monday, but still very cold. Temperatures will start in the teens and push into the upper 20s/lower 30s Tuesday afternoon, with a few clouds around.

By Wednesday we begin to become more mild, with temperatures returning into the upper 40s/lower 50s. Mild conditions will persist through late week, with rain showers returning into Friday. Stay tuned!
