Archery bucks offer lasting memories for hunter - Buffalo News

By Joe Famiglietti

As an avid bowhunter since 1967, I’ve had some great hunting experiences and some not so great.

I was fortunate to have my best year ever in 2019 in terms of harvesting three bucks with the bow. My big game hunting started in early September when I booked a South Dakota deer hunt, which took place about an hour’s drive north of Rapid City. I choose this hunt because the nonresident archery tag is guaranteed. The area is rich with deer, both whitetails and mule deer. The archery license allows you to shoot a buck and a doe.

The week I hunted was very warm, and for the first few days, the hunting was slow. On the fourth afternoon of the hunt, I took with one arrow a nice doe that was feeding in an alfalfa field. The following morning, I set up next to a corn field, and at first light several groups of does passed by me on their way to bedding areas. About an hour later, three bucks approached my treestand and the largest one gave me a perfect 25-yard shot. He was a respectable eight point. This was a great way to start off my 2019 season as I had two deer in the freezer.

My next hunt was in the New York bowhunting season. I was in no real hurry to shoot a buck as I hoped to take one bigger than my Dakota buck. Hunting in Allegany County, I was aware of a very nice eight point that I was hopeful to shoot. At about 7:45 a.m. in early October, I heard a deer approaching. I could see his horns above some high brush and clearly saw 6 points. He offered a shot, which I took, assuming he was the 8 point I was after. It was a good single arrow kill shot, but when I found the deer, to my surprise he had a nice wide rack but was a 6 point having no brow tines. At 70 years old, I guess I had a senior moment.

During the remainder of the bowhunting season, I located a couple of nice bucks and made the decision to hunt for one using my bow during the regular gun season. On the third day of the regular season in November, while hunting on public land in Allegany County, I heard some gunshots at about 4 p.m. below me. A few minutes later, a very nice buck came sneaking through the heavy thicket I was set up in. He offered a broadside 20-yard shot, which I took. It was a good hit and I watched him go down quickly.

Dressed in my red outfit, I approached the deer, and he was an 8 point with a 15-inch rack and weighed almost 180 pounds. I managed to get him out of the woods, and there were some very disappointed gun hunters in the area that had been after that buck. I’ve bowhunted in the past during the regular season, but this was the best buck I’ve ever taken with the bow during gun season.

I’ve spent most of my adult life hunting big game with the bow in several states and in several countries. But 2019 will always be a special year for me having taken three nice bucks with my compound bow. Hunting is a great sport, and no matter your choice of hunting tool, it is a wonderful way to spend time in the outdoors with friends and family as well as to fill our freezers with very healthy meat.
