DULUTH, MN-- Domestic violence impacts everyone and when there are children in a home there can be a long-lasting impact.
"We know research says that particularly children under six years old are witnessing or are involved in over half of domestic violence incidences in the home," Laura Gapske, program director of First Witness Child's Advocates
Child advocates at Duluth's First Witness say that impact and trauma can last long past childhood.
Gapske says, "Using violence in schools, in their relationships, in their community, as they grow into adulthood. Or also substance abuse to cope with being maltreated in the home."
First witness advocates say more than 90% of domestic violence perpetrators are male.
First Witness usually works with mothers in the wake of that violence.
They add when victims are getting help the most important part is to listen and not judge.
"Because through supporting that mom and not judging her for her decisions we can really support the kids," says Gapske.
