Life is moving fast for Isaac “Spike” Sowells. The contact recruiting period is underway and the three-star talent, ranked by Rivals as the No. 5 center in the 2025 recruiting class, is hosting a seemingly unending cast of coaches at Louisville’s Male High School this spring.
“It’s actually been pretty crazy,” Sowells told KSR Thursday afternoon. “I had my first-period class (on Wednesday) — in school, we have seven periods — I was midway through when the first set of coaches came in from Virginia. Right after them, it was West Virginia, and right after West Virginia it was NC State, and right after them it was Kentucky. My whole school day was full. I really only got to go to one class.”
Missing class to speak with coaches sounds like a charmed life. It’s becoming the expectation this spring, yet he’s still being surprised.
“It was great getting to see (Coach Stoops),” said Sowells. “A big thing for me is when a (head) coach will actually come see you. I was pretty happy to see Coach Stoops because I thought it was going to just be Vince. When I saw Coach Stoops I thought that was really special.”
It’s not the first time he’s been surprised by a head coach. On the first day of the contact period, former Kentucky offensive line coach Zach Yenser made the trip to Louisville. He popped in right after Sowells hosted UofL assistant Chris Barclay, a former Male Bulldog, and head coach Jeff Brohm.
“I was surprised because the previous staff didn’t recruit me. When Coach Brohm got there, came and saw me, it was a real shocker to me,” said Sowells.
Jeff Brohm has spent a significant amount of roster-building resources on the transfer portal. Now entering his first full offseason on the high school recruiting circuit, Sowells is the first head-to-head recruiting battle between Kentucky and Louisville. Even though Male was once a feeder school to UofL, the Cards have a lot of ground to cover.
“In years before Louisville wasn’t prominent in recruiting the Louisville area and Male High School. There was a lot of guys that wanted to go to UofL but didn’t get the opportunity,” said the high school junior.
“Izayah Cummings, Louisville didn’t call and he ended up going to Kentucky and was a big piece of helping the team. I think it’s pretty dope to see them back in action, trying to get recruits in the home state.”
Sowells has Multiple Options with Kentucky Visit on the Horizon
Isaac Sowells Jr. goes by Spike, and he’s the son of Big Ike Sowells, who played his college football career on the Indiana offensive line in the early 00s. One might think a former college football player might be hands-on with his son’s recruitment, but that’s not the case for the Sowells family.
“For him, the biggest thing is to do what’s best for Spike, not for my Mom, my Dad, my friends, my family, everybody else, just do what’s best for me.”
This weekend the best thing for the younger Sowells is to check out The U. He was offered by Miami a few weeks ago and will continue his busy spring by taking his first unofficial visit to South Florida. Next weekend he’ll be back in Lexington for Kentucky Junior Day.
Sowells attended Kentucky’s home opener last fall and was at the Governor’s Cup victory to end the season. The Wildcats pitch to Sowells is simple. Kentucky put multiple homegrown products in the NFL. He can help revitalize the Big Blue Wall and become the next to cash checks on Sundays. The appeal to play in the SEC is also alluring.
“They think that I’d be a very good fit for them. Another big thing is you can’t beat SEC football. Some of the other schools I have are in the Big Ten or ACC. SEC is the biggest dog in the nation,” said Sowells.
Speaking of Big Dogs, Vince Marrow is leading the charge to ensure Jeff Brohm does not pick up a significant in-state recruiting win. Sowells can’t put his finger on it, but when Marrow talks, he listens.
“He has a…” Sowells paused for about six seconds, searching for the right words to use. “I don’t even know how you put it. Just being around him, it makes you want to be a part of where he’s at. I can’t even put it into words.”
Will it be Kentucky? Sowells plans on enrolling at his next school in January and is tentatively planning for a summer commitment. There’s plenty of time for things to change, but it sounds like the Cats and the Cards will dueling down the stretch.
