TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The First Alert Weather Team has issued A First Alert Weather Day for today, January 24th 2024 for dense fog.
The fog is expected to impact the morning commute, but the fog may stick around through the day northwest of US 24. Dense fog is expected to redevelop across the entire area tonight and it may last through the day on Thursday. Fog is expected to reduce the visibility to around a quarter mile or less at times. Along with the fog, rain is expected at times today and again for late day on Thursday.
So why is this fog so long lasting? It is not our normal fog or “radiation fog” which develops under a clear sky, and light winds. Instead this is called “advection fog” which occurs when a light warming wind moves over a cold ground and/or melting snow pack. That moisture ends up going right back into the air as fog. There is snow on the ground yet northwest of US 24 and that is why we think fog may linger in this zone through today and again tonight into Thursday even when rain is in the forecast.
