FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: Long lasting dense fog - WTVG

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The 13 First Alert Weather Team has extended the First Alert Weather Day for fog that is expected to linger through Thursday, January 25th, 2024.

Dense fog is possible for the entire viewing area tonight into Thursday morning. The lower visibility, in addition to some leftover slick spots (even though temperatures are above freezing), will make travel more difficult overnight into the Thursday morning commute.

If you must travel, allow extra time and be prepared for possible school delays and cancelations. Check the latest listings at the link here.

Along with the fog, rain is expected to move into the area Thursday evening.

So why is this fog so long lasting? It is not our normal fog or “radiation fog” which develops under a clear sky, and light winds. Instead this is called “advection fog” which occurs when a light warming wind moves over a cold ground and/or melting snow pack. That moisture ends up going right back into the air as fog. There is snow on the ground yet northwest of US 24 and that is why we think fog may linger in this zone through today and again tonight into Thursday even when rain is in the forecast.
