TROY, NY (WRGB) — The new year is already off to a historic start in the city of Troy.
Mayor-elect Carmella Mantello took the oath of office Monday morning and became the first woman to hold the position in the city.
"Some call it historic and that sounds nice; to be historic though you need to be more than just the first woman to hold the office,” Mantello said in her inaugural address. “We must make lasting change that improves the lives of the people of Troy."
Mantello promised the almost 50,000 people who call Troy home to be a mayor for all, especially during trying times of economic challenges.

"Too many fear that our best days are behind us, that our problems are intractable, and that the government is not up to facing the challenges of the day," Mantello said. "But history tells us, Troy has been through times of rapid change and uncertainty before and that we have overcome what seemed insurmountable before."
The mayor promised to take a bipartisan approach to get the job done.
"There is no Democrat or Republican way to pick up garbage or plow the streets, we are building a diverse bi-partisan administration focused on delivering results for the people of Troy,” she added. “When I look around this state and nation, I see to many cities that are being governed as some kind of mad social experiment with agendas that are out of touch; causing harm to the very people who need city government to work for you."

Vowing to create a blueprint for the future of the collar city with a quality-of-life task force to tackle blighted buildings, and trash, fixing lead water service lines, and enhancing public safety.
Mantello said: "Whether you're a wealthy out-of-town predatory slumlord or an opportunistic shoplifter, your days of victimizing the people and businesses in Troy are over. Let's also repair and modernize the infrastructure of our great city, no person in Troy should be drinking water tainted by lead, no parent should lie awake at night worried that a baby's bath water is a toxic stew."
Mantello, a mother herself, aims to create a brighter path for the next generation and honor of the young lives lost to violence such as 11-year-old Ayshawn Davis who was killed during a drive-by shooting in 2020.
“It discourages investment and in too many heartbreaking instances it shatters lives. the murder of Ayshawn Davis broke our hearts but it will not break out will."
