Hanrahan: Dreams Of Long Lasting - Los Alamos Daily Post

By LYNN HANRAHAN

Los Alamos

Another good bye. I first became aware of Triatomics, the Los Alamos Multi-sport club, twenty years or so ago when we would be driving home sleepy from floaty night at East Park Pool and they would be running down Canyon Road in the gloaming in their bathing suits. Seemed a little weird but a few years later all the kids would be running alongside them.

Triatomics will probably become a thing of the past this month. Times change, membership dwindles, people move on. This breaks my heart. I can’t imagine having raised my family without this club. There is Logan who by running like the wind had the kids aspiring to do likewise. Mike, the all around athlete and organizer, who led events for years – remember the Duathlon. Accomplished mountain bikers like Hugh who fueled my son’s cycling ambitions. Older athletes like Ted who showed up at Splash and Dash and often finished last, but did indeed finish, despite being several decades older than most.

These people and so many others helped my kids dare to dream about running marathons, cycling big races, and simply love being in our big, beautiful outdoors. My youngest has her sights set on running the Tromso all-night Marathon on Solstice night this summer. Of course it will cost a fortune to get there but I really don’t have a lot else going on at the moment other than working weird side jobs, eating Ramen, and keeping the house sort of cool to help her out. Why not? Daring to dream about doing all the neat things so many members of Triatomics have taught them to aspire to is worthwhile.

Thank you Los Alamos Multi-sport club. Summertime Wednesday nights will never be the same.
