Social Media Group Aims To Make Lasting Memories For The Class Of 2020 - 1380 KCIM

Every day we face something unprecedented during this COVID-19 pandemic. People have become creative in ways to stay social while still practicing physical distancing. But as schools have cancelled classes and activities for the remainder of the year, seniors are missing out on many of the benchmarks at the close of their post-secondary scholastic career. Proms are cancelled, sporting arenas and fields for the spring season are empty and many schools are searching out viable options for graduation ceremonies that adhere to limitations on gatherings. Creativity has come to the forefront again and resulted in a new movement sweeping social media. Several communities have come together to build their own “Adopt a Senior” Facebook groups, inviting everyone to take part, and the Carroll area is no exception as they have built the Carroll, IA Adopt a Tiger or Knight page. Currently 277-members strong, this Facebook group is asking parents of Carroll and Kuemper seniors to post a photo and some details about their student and type the words “Not Adopted” as the heading of the post. Visitors review the listings of those students not yet adopted and simply comment in the post that they want to adopt the senior and then private message the person responsible for contact details. The adopters can shower their special senior with fun things, such as cards and words of encouragement, gifts, gift cards or snacks. Everyone is encouraged to use their imagination in finding ways to make lasting memories for this milestone. The groups’ organizers ask that all participants remember to adhere to physical distancing recommendations and to shop locally as much as possible.
