Maple Lake has pulled together again to meet a challenge put forth by Gov. Tim Walz on April 17 that called for local fire departments to collect and distribute as many homemade masks as they could in honor of workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they didn’t have a lot of time to do it.
The initiative gave Minnesotans one week to make as many homemade masks as possible and designated 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25 as the delivery date for the masks with drop-off locations with local fire departments.
As part of the governor’s initiative, fire chiefs were told they could determine how and where to distribute the masks.
“Our department works well together, so I’m not surprised we were able to pull it off,” said Lisa Hegle, a member of the Maple Lake Fire Department.
Last week before the mask drive took place, Hegle expressed her confidence that Maple Lake would step up to the challenge.
“Our community comes together in times of need, and from different things I have seen, we have a wonderful group of mask makers who truly care about people and their community,” she said.
Hegle was right on every count.
Hegle waited outside the station for masks to be delivered from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday and collected 250 masks. She said eight or nine people donated.
Most of the masks went to residents at Maple Manor, the rest will go to various places in the community.
The governor’s challenge came as a surprise to many fire departments that received short notice of the plan. Maple Lake was initially going to bow out as we are a small town and most people who need masks know who to contact, Hegle said.
“We have a handful of mask heroes in our town. They have been busy and putting their hearts into helping the community. We did not want to overwhelm them with added work,” she said.
But when people started approaching department members and asking if they were going to take part, they decided it couldn’t hurt.
Since Maple Lake has no hospitals, clinics or senior care facilities to supply with the masks, they approached Maple Manor and found the residents there were appreciative of the donation.
Although the fire department didn’t have a lot of time to get the word out about the mask drive, there is now no doubt it has benefited the community.
