WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- A Winston-Salem church's long-lasting Easter tradition was altered this year due to the coronavirus.
The Easter morning congregates of Home Moravian Church knew has now changed because the pandemic. For 248 years, that’s all anyone’s ever known. That was until Sunday, when the church decided to conduct its Easter service through live stream. Dozens of people, like Matthew Bailey, agree the church made the right decision.
“The way they’re handling it is really smart, to practice social distancing and to make sure people are safe the way they’ve chosen to do it this year is a really great idea," Bailey said.
Some congregates still chose to stand outside the church to watch the live stream so they could still practice the tradition of walking to the Salem Moravian graveyard to watch the sunrise. Others decided to stay at home like, Betsy Bombick and her husband. Betsy is 8th generation Moravian and this is something she looks forward to every year.
“We’ve brought it up on the television and we’ve brought it up on Facebook and we can comment with other church members while the service is going on or afterwards so that’s been very helpful but it’s been hard not being together, especially during Lent, Holy Weekend and now Easter," Betsy said.
While it's not what most people planned for, the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection will go on no matter where they are.
“It’s not a normal Easter by any stretch but still we’re making it happen, what are you going to do? You go out and make it happen," Bailey added.
