Following the No. 13 Michigan football team's dominant 49-24 road win over Minnesota Saturday night, we break down our five lasting takeaways from the contest and what it means for the Wolverines.
Joe Milton is more than ready
While few people were down on Joe Milton before the season — especially after he ran away with Michigan’s starting quarterback job and drew such rave reviews from his teammates and coaches — there was a great deal of unknown surrounding the talented redshirt sophomore. Milton had thrown 11 passes in his career, had spotty experience as a high-school player and really the only evidence that he would be good was word of mouth and a cannon arm in warmups. Michigan and its fans were optimistic, but no one knew if they were right to be.
That changed Saturday night.
Whether he was keeping the ball and finding the corner, zipping a screen pass or even slinging an occasional pass downfield, Milton had a great starting debut Saturday night. He threw for 225 yards on 15-for-22 passing and added 52 rushing yards on eight carries. It may not have been an award-winning performance, but it sure was a winning one.
What may have stood out the most about Milton’s performance was how easy he made it look. Every run seemed to have an opening (more on that below) and Michigan’s play designs created several openings for pass-catchers. Throughout the night, Milton’s role seemed less to carry the team on his shoulders as it was to drive the team in his car. Get your timing right, stay patient even if chaos emerges around you and make the right decisions without rushing or panicking.
