Looking for a low-effort, last-minute, topical Halloween costume?
Meme costumes, like most meme references, rarely age well. But after this disaster of a year, any attempt at levity is probably appreciated.
2020's memes were different than previous years, with TikTok trends dominating internet culture as app downloads skyrocketed through quarantine. The memes from pre-quarantine are drastically different from the memes that were born after the pandemic struck, but if you want to remind people of the Before Times this Halloween, try on a few of these ideas. And if you want to wear a more recent reference, we've got suggestions for those, too.
Here are nine easy meme-themed Halloween costumes for you to social distance in this year.
1. Bernie once again asking for your support
Remember the primaries? I, for one, barely do. A fundraising video of Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders "once again asking for your support" became a meme at the start of this year. All you need to dress up like the Sanders meme is a puffy jacket and a willingness to once again ask for your friends' support.
2. Cuomo's briefing slides
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's daily coronavirus briefings became a viral hit at the start of the pandemic. The longer the state's stay-at-home order continued, the more exasperated Cuomo appeared. By April, he was just reading spoken word poetry. All you need is a large poster board of tired phrases and a cutout for your own face.
3. The DaVinki twins
The Voros twins, better known as the DaVinky twins, are Canadian pro wrestlers-turned meme. Their earnest, but hilariously dumb attempt at pronouncing the artist who painted the Mona Lisa as "Da Vinky" was exactly the kind of himbo energy we all needed to end the summer. All you need is a white t-shirt, a lot of spiked hair, and a pure heart.
4. Trisha Paytas
Trisha Paytas may be controversial, but she never fails to get attention. She mesmerized TikTok users with a bizarre video of herself singing along to "King Tut" while dressed in a questionably offensive Cleopatra-esque costume, inspiring countless parodies and lookalikes. Luckily, you don't have to culturally appropriate Egyptian royalty to dress up as Trisha Paytas, because she recreated the video several times in different costumes.
5. Debbie Ryan
Debbie Ryan, to her credit, knows how to take a joke. After a screenshot of the actress making this mischievous expression in Radio Rebel went viral, she recreated the look in a TikTok. Get a red shirt, fingerless gloves, and bangs and you're all set.
6. Bong Joon Ho's Oscars kiss
Ah yes, another moment in the Before Times. Bong Joon Ho's Parasite swept the Oscars this year, and a photo of him making his awards kiss captured all of our hearts. Grab a friend, paint yourself gold, and smooch.
7. Lin-Manuel Miranda's selfie
A 2013 selfie of Lin-Manuel Miranda biting his lip blew up on TikTok, and it can be such an easy Halloween costume. All you need is a fake goatee, an orange jacket, and way too much confidence.
8. JFK from Clone High
TikTok is obsessed with a cartoon version of President John F. Kennedy, who appears as an arrogant 16-year-old in the early 2000s series Clone High. Several of his lines have become viral TikTok sounds, and it's a simple costume to put together. Don some khakis, a striped polo shirt, and your worst New England accent.
9. An Among Us player
The competitive game Among Us, in which players try to figure out who the imposter is before they're killed off, is one of the most popular games to play right now. With social distancing guidelines limiting in-person interaction, it's no surprise that people have taken to interacting with (and betraying) their friends through this game. For a group costume, try dressing up as all of the character.
No matter how you dress up this Halloween, make sure to wear a mask and celebrate safely.
