This week, the Latin Recording Academy revealed the nominees for its 21st annual Latin Grammy Awards, with the 13-time-nominated J Balvin leading the pack.
Balvin has officially made history as the artist with the most noms at a single Latin Grammy show in its 21-year history, nominated twice in many categories including record of the year (for his solo track “Rojo” and as a featured artist on Anuel AA’s “China”) and album of the year and best urban album (for his own Colores and for Oasis, his joint album with Bad Bunny).
The reggaeton-heavy list includes top nominees such as Bad Bunny (9), Ozuna (8) and Anuel (7).
In honor of the upcoming awards ceremony, airing live at 8 p.m. ET on Nov. 19 via the Univision network, Billboard highlights all the nominations in the Best Urban Music Album category, which recognizes albums containing at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental urban recordings.
From Anuel’s soul-baring Emmanuel to Myke Towers’ first nomination with Easy Money Baby, check out the full list below.
Anuel, Emmanuel
The album: Emmanuel, which is named after Anuel's real name, is home to 22 tracks including some surprise collaborations with Travis Barker, Lil Wayne, Enrique Iglesias and Tego Calderon. From music for the clubs ("Reggaetonera") to sentimental bops ("No Llores Mujer"), the album spotlights Anuel’s versatility.
On the charts: Emmanuel debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums Chart (and Latin Rhythm Albums) chart dated June 13. The set earned Anuel his second No. 1 on both charts. On the Billboard 200 chart, it earned Anuel his highest debut and ranking: The set bowed at No. 8 on the June 13-dated list.
Bad Bunny, YHLQMDLG
The album: “When I make music, my vision goes beyond the numbers,” Bad Bunny previously told Billboard. “That’s why YHLQMDLG is historic! Thank you all who believed and who continue to believe in me. I do what I want, and it’s based on feelings; I don’t think about it. I do it for you and for the faith you have in me. I Love You!”
On the charts: YHLQMDLG debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums (and Latin Rhythm Albums) chart dated March 14. He replaced himself at No. 1. The song is on its 26th week at No. 1 (and counting). On the Billboard 200 chart, it debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the March 14-dated list.
J Balvin & Bad Bunny, Oasis
The album: In their first-ever collaborative eight-track set, which includes "Mi Cancion" and "Que Pretendes," J Balvin and Bad Bunny blend their individual flow, essence and roots, bringing to life an album filled with old-school perreo, sensual traps and global reggaeton fusions.
On the charts: Oasis debuted at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums (and Latin Rhythm Albums) chart dated July 13, 2019. It reigned for 8 weeks. On the Billboard 200 chart, it debuted and peaked at No. 9 on the July 13, 2019-dated list.
J Balvin, Colores
The Album: The conceptual set, with each song named after a color, features collaborations with Sky and Mr. Eazi and is an intimate look at who J Balvin (real name: José Álvaro Osorio Balvin) is as a person and an artist. Released in the middle of the pandemic, the album brings joy to his fans during these challenging times.
On the charts: Colores debuted at No. 32 on the Top Latin Albums chart dated March 28, but from one day of activity only as it was released early on March 19 (instead of its previously announced March 20 street date). It peaked at No. 2 the following week (chart dated April 4) where it remained for seven consecutive weeks. The album earned J Balvin his fifth straight top 10 on Top Latin Albums. On the Billboard 200 chart, it debuted and peaked at No. 15 on the April 4-dated list.
Feid, FERXXO (VOL 1: M.O.R.)
The album: "I was inspired by the time when we were younger and we'd send those cheesy text messages to our crush thinking they were super romantic," Feid says. "My music is also inspired by stories that I hear about friends or personal stories always about a girl. The song is either about missing a girl or falling in love. I'm very romantic but in my own way.
On the charts: FERXXO (VOL 1: M.O.R.) peaked at No, 27 on Top Latin Albums chart dated July 18-dated list. It is his highest-charting title. Remained on the chart for 11 weeks.
Ozuna, Nibiru
The album: Ozuna tells Billboard that this collection of songs took a great deal of time and dedication to complete. “I traveled a lot, not just to do shows, but to meet with different producers and artists,” he says, naming the likes of Diddy, DJ Snake, Snoop Dogg, Sech, Willy and Cultura Profetica.
On the charts: Nibirudebuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart (and Latin Rhythm Albums) dated Dec. 14, 2019. On the current chart (dated Oct. 3), it ranks at No. 43. On the Billboard 200 chart, it debuted and peaked at No. 41 on the Dec. 14, 2019-dated list.
Sech, 1 of 1
The album: “This is a baby of mine that I have been creating little by little. It’s a beautiful project,” Sech previously told Billboard. “The album’s title represents that I’m unique and that there’s no one like me in this genre. Everyone is unique. This album too.”
On the charts: 1 of 1 launched at No. 15 on the Top Latin Albums chart dated May 30 after only one day of activity in the previous tracking week ending May 21, following its release that same day. It peaked at No. 4 a week later (chart dated June 6) on Top Latin Albums (and Latin Rhythm Albums) It earned Sech his second top 10 on Top Latin Albums. On the Billboard 200 chart, it debuted and peaked at No. 168 on the June 6-dated list.
Myke Towers, Easy Money Baby
The album: Easy Money Baby, released via White World Music and distributed by GLAD Empire, is home to 18 songs, including “Si Se Da,” “Piensan” and “La Playa.” Though he’s primarily known for his rap music, the Puerto Rican artist took the risk to experiment with new sounds
On the charts: Easy Money Baby earned Myke his first entry and first No. 1 on Top Latin Albums (and Latin Rhythm Albums) as the set arrived atop the tally dated Feb. 10. It also earned him his first appearance on any Billboard Albums chart. On the Billboard 200 chart, it debuted and peaked at No. 55 on the Feb. 8-dated list. His first and only entry on the tally.
