Louisville weather: Sunday brings chance for severe weather lasting throughout the week - Courier Journal

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Louisville and surrounding areas.

The watch is set to last until 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the weather service. Strong to severe weather started rolling through the region Sunday afternoon, leaving nearly 25,000 people without power, according to a state power outage map. Chances of storms persist through Sunday evening into overnight hours as well, the weather service said.

The main threats will be damaging winds with large hail and heavy rain, the weather service said. A tornado is possible with storms most likely being between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Temperatures will be in the upper 80s and low 90s, ushering in muggy conditions this week, the weather service said.

Weather for the Fourth of July brings the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms and a chance of precipitation of about 20%.

What's in the forecast for Louisville this week?

Monday: A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Partly sunny with a high near 88. West winds around 8 mph. The low will be around 68.

Fourth of July (Tuesday): A slight chance of showers with thunderstorms is possible after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny with a high near 89. Calm winds around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20% with a low around 70. Chance of thunderstorms before 8 p.m.

Wednesday: A chance of showers with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Low is around 72 and possible storms in the evening.

Thursday: A chance of showers before 8 a.m. then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Evening: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m. then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. then a chance of showers after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy with a low around 68. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday: A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 84 and a slight chance of showers in the evening with a low of 65.
