The Long-Lasting Red Lipsticks I Never Travel Without - Condé Nast Traveler

At home in Paris, a red lip feels like an everyday part of life. An undeniable classic, it can be worn softly smudged on for coffee in the morning or applied more thoughtfully at night. It complements an already dressed-up look, elevates jeans and a T-shirt, and makes a Zoom call read like I’m not wearing sweats.

I’m currently spending two months away from home—and the comfort of everyday routines—while on tour in the United States and Canada for my most recent book le SUD: Recipes from Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. When I left Paris, I tucked a few favorite reds in my bag. Along the way, I’ve picked up a few more—compact souvenirs, if you will. Their size is especially important when traveling for two months with only a carry-on.

During this time on the road, applying a red lip has taken on a deeper layer of meaning. Done in the lead up to hosting apéros and dinners across the country, television appearances and talks held at favorite bookstores, the simple act of putting on a red lip has served to ease the transition from introvert writer to slightly less introverted conversationalist—at least for the length of application.

My roving collection spans deep reds to more orange-undertone hues; from sheer and moisturizing to glossy and lush to matte and decidedly bold. There are options to apply sans-mirror on the go and others that ask for a more steady hand (none, for me at least, require a liner). Listed below are my reds with staying power, all of which I’ll be keeping in rotation long after I’m back to normal routines.

The very best red lipsticks:

Chanel Rouge Allure L'Extrait

When I want to go all in with an intensely bright, intensely red lip, Chanel’s Rouge Allure l’Extrait in shade 854 is my go-to. The refillable lipstick has a thinner bullet that feels both sleek and compact, and also helps to make the color application more precise. While it’s definitely not one I can quickly slip on in a moving vehicle or without a mirror, the strong red color is phenomenal and has serious lasting power. It's perfect for date nights or occasions when I want to feel especially powerful.

Violette Fr Bisou Balm

On days when I’m after a hit of color but not looking for it to read too strong (or need an especially stable hand), I reach for Violette FR’s Bisou Balm in Amour Fou. It’s an everyday lip that imparts a soft stroke of color and diffused edges, giving you that understated bitten-lip look without much fuss.

La Bouche Rouge lipstick

Another refillable lipstick, this one with a leather case (and an option to monogram) comes from French label La Bouche Rouge. The Rouge Vendôme is fire red with orange undertones and enriched with spring seaweed harvested in Saint-Suliac in Brittany. It’s both moisturizing and strongly pigmented with a demi-matte finish.

Tata Harper Lip Crème

I love much of what the Tata Harper team does (especially for those of us with sensitive skin) so when the brand released its lip crèmes last year, I had a good feeling about them. More of a tinted, lightweight lip balm than a lipstick, the Lip Crème in Juicy reads sheer raspberry and is ideal for a soft daytime look. I especially love to use it on travel days for a one-two punch of color plus nourishment. I’ll add a few layers to up the vibrancy if I’m out for the night and want a deeper tint.

Noto Botanics Oscillate blush and lip tint

I’ve been wearing this tinted lip and cheek tint on and off for years and always make sure to re-up my stock when I come to the US. It’s a nourishing and buildable tint in a juicy, easy-going, cherry red hue. You can tailor the color intensity to your preference—I’ll tap it on for a sheer color or layer it a few times for something more bold.

Westman Atelier Lip Suede

Look, did I try this shade based on the name alone? Yes, but as it turns out—like so much of what the team at Westman Atelier does—the bright, flattering, tomato-esque shade is a worthy investment. The lipstick is matte but not drying and feels lovely going on. There’s also a hidden mirror in the magnetic cap which helps for applying en route to events (and the case is refillable).

Typology tinted lip oil

Less for a strong color and more for a moisturizing, glossy, subtle tint, Typology’s tinted lip oil is hydrating (it’s enriched with squalene, jojoba oil, and vitamin E), but doesn’t feel sticky. The square bottle packaging, made with recyclable glass, is pretty and unique.

Rouge Hermes

Unsurprisingly, a lipstick (or two!) from Hermès comes in as one of the more luxurious—and pricey—options on the list. Recently I’ve been wearing one of the satin varieties in a vibrant orange-toned red and one matte in a limited edition deep, bold red (the limited edition spring-summer 2024 case is designed by Pierre Hardy). I’ll often apply each more carefully though if I want a more sheer, daytime color (sometimes I’ll gently blot one of them on and top with a lip balm). While I do have to reapply both of these fairly frequently, the color fades evenly and does its part to get me through an event. The lipstick cases are both refillable and each comes very chicly tucked in an individual canvas pouch inside a signature orange box.

The hydrating lip balms and masks I recommend:

The key to a smooth, long-lasting lip (especially when opting for a matte option) is starting with hydrated lips. I always have this Kosas lip balm tucked in my pocket, on the bedside table, and in my purse. For a (worthy) splurge, I also love the BioKiss lip balm from Biologique Recherche. For an overnight treatment, I like the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
