Can facial cupping give you a long-lasting wrinkle-free look? Experts weigh in - India Today

Who doesn’t wish to look youthful and radiant all the time? Unfortunately, unlike Meryl Streep in the 1992 movie 'Death Becomes Her', we don't have a magical potion to reverse ageing. Instead, we rely on various tricks and tips available on social media.

From face taping to facial yoga, beauty enthusiasts have tried everything, and now they are obsessing over facial cupping. But the real question is: can this popular technique provide long-lasting results?

What is it?

"Facial cupping, a milder form of cupping, is a procedure of gently lifting the skin with the help of suction through cups, causing stretching of tissues and increasing blood flow towards the suction area," Dr Shareefa Isa Chause, dermatologist and founder of Shareefa's Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai, tells India Today.

Dr Badar Salman Batliwala, a Mumbai-based certified cupping, leech practitioner, and trichologist, further explains that in contrast with body cupping, facial cupping uses smaller cups to gently uplift the facial skin to promote blood circulation and to treat various skin conditions as well.

Facial cupping vs body cupping

"Although both facial and body cupping are based on the same principles, they are both executed in different manners and for different indications," says Dr Niti Gaur, dermatologist, founder of Citrine Clinic, Gurugram.

  • Facial cups are usually smaller and softer. They gently pull the skin away from deeper layers of fascia.
  • This improves blood circulation to the area, leading to skin rejuvenation and reduced fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Body cupping, on the other hand, is primarily used to relieve body pain, and the cupping leaves marks, which indicate the amount of cellular waste present.
  • These marks gradually recede as the lymphatic system clears the toxins.
  • Facial cups are suited for delicate skin, whereas body cupping uses sturdier cups, often made of bamboo, glass, or earthenware.

How does facial cupping work?

"The suction effect pulls blood into the area of skin underneath the cup. This saturates the surrounding tissue with fresh blood and promotes new blood vessel formation," explains Dr Badar Salman Batliwala.

The doctor adds that the vacuum-like suction separates different layers of tissues, resulting in microtrauma and tearing. This triggers an inflammatory response, flooding the area with white blood cells, platelets, and other healing aids.

Adding to this, Dr Niti Gaur mentions, "The suction effect pulls blood into the area of skin underneath the cup. This causes oxygen and essential nutrients to flood in and helps the body eliminate impurities."

Let's talk about the benefits

  • Facial cupping increases blood circulation
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Relaxes muscle tension
  • Brightens the skin
  • Minimises the appearance of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles
  • Reduces puffiness by helping in the removal of accumulated cellular waste and fluids
  • Reduces the appearance of open pores
  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Reduces pigmentation and strengthens the skin and connective tissues
  • Regulates oil production

What about the scary marks?

Experts feel that if facial cupping is done properly, it won’t harm or bruise at all. It works best with a serum or oil, which reduces friction and prevents bruising.

"In this method, facial cups are swept upward and outward across the face while using a squeeze-and-release technique to suction the cups to the skin. This is repeated several times on each side of the face, beginning at the base of the neck and working along the jawline, cheek area, and forehead," explains Dr Niti Gaur.

Always remember...

  • Bruising may occur if the cup is left in the same place for too long.
  • Those with very sensitive or thin skin, rosacea, or any actively infected or inflamed skin should avoid facial cupping.
  • Facial cupping can increase the risk of infection. It may cause nausea and dizziness.
  • The elderly, children, pregnant women, and women on their periods are advised to avoid this therapy.
  • People with high cholesterol levels or a high risk of cardiovascular problems should also not undergo this therapy.

Can facial cupping give long-lasting effects?

"The many benefits of facial cupping are not permanent, but if you add this practice to your skincare routine regularly, it will definitely give you the best result for a longer period of time," says Dr Shareefa Isa Chause.

Dr Badar Salman Batliwala agrees and says that you have to do facial cupping regularly if you want the effects to be prolonged.

However, Dr Gaur states, "While facial cupping is believed to have many rejuvenating benefits, most of these claims are based on anecdotal evidence rather than scientific studies. There is no evidence to the fact that microtrauma to the skin helps fade fine lines or wrinkles."

Takeaway

If facial cupping is done regularly, it can help reduce puffiness, promote cell turnover, decrease wrinkles and fine lines, relieve muscle tension, and stimulate collagen production.

The increased collagen makes the skin firm, the elevated blood circulation leaves the skin looking supple, and the drained lymphatics help tone and lift the face.

However, the results are not permanent, and if not done correctly, you may be left with a bruise.
