Indonesia calls for lasting peace in Gaza following US-sponsored resolution - Middle East and Africa - The Jakarta Post

ndonesia, through the Foreign Ministry, has welcomed a United Nations Security Council resolution for a three-phase ceasefire plan in Gaza, urging all parties to work toward ending Israel’s eight-month assault on the region.

The UNSC adopted on Monday a resolution endorsing a United States-sponsored proposal that calls for an initial six-week ceasefire, under which Israel would withdraw from Gaza’s population centers and Hamas would free hostages taken during the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks that triggered the war.

The second phase of the plan would include a permanent end to hostilities and the release of the remaining hostages, while the third phase would involve a multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday on social media platform X that the adoption of the UNSC resolution was “a long overdue yet important step to stop the ongoing atrocities” against Palestinians and toward achieving an “immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza”.

Therefore, it said, “Indonesia urges all parties to reach an agreement without delay to ensure a lasting ceasefire, immediate relief for the Palestinian people and to pave the way toward the implementation of the two-state solution”.

UNSC resolutions are binding for member states, although it remains unclear how the ceasefire will be enforced.

In March, the UNSC adopted a resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The vote was 14-0, with the US abstaining. But there was no halt to the Israeli offensive.

The US, a staunch ally of Israel, had been widely criticized for blocking several previous UN draft resolutions calling for a ceasefire, AFP reported. But US President Joe Biden late last month launched a new US effort to secure a truce and hostage release.

"Today we voted for peace," US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said after the UN session.

The resolution says Israel has accepted the truce plan, and "calls upon Hamas to also accept it".

Hamas said Monday it "welcomes" the vote and reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate with mediators.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas described the UN vote as a "step in the right direction". (ipa)
