Red Line closures lasting 10 days straight to start Monday - Boston.com

Transportation

Free shuttles will be making stops between the closed stations, and some commuter rail service will be fare-free.

Service on part of the MBTA Red Line is slated to be suspended for 10 days starting Monday. Riders should plan for “extra travel time” in the coming weeks because of the closures, the MBTA said.

From Feb. 5 to Feb. 14, Red Line service between Alewife and Harvard will be suspended. The closure will extend after 8:45 p.m. to between Alewife and Park Street.

Free shuttle buses will be making all stops between the stations, and two accessible vans will be available between stops on weekdays. The commuter rail will also be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station.

Red Line service between Harvard and Broadway will be suspended Saturday, Feb. 24 to Sunday, Feb. 25 and again on Saturday, March 2 to Sunday, March 3. This closure will coincide with full closures of some Green Line branches that are scheduled between Feb. 20 and March 8.

Free shuttle buses will be available during weekend closures. Fare gates will be open at the Harvard and Broadway stations and commuter rail will be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station.

The suspensions are part of MBTA’s Track Improvement Program that involves a year full of T closures aimed at eliminating all speed restrictions and bringing tracks “closer to a state of good repair” by the end of 2024. During the closures, track work such as spot repairs, tire replacements, rail replacements, and ballast replacements will take place.

There are currently more than 50 speed restrictions on the Red Line, which make up about 18% of the total line, according to the MBTA.

During the closure, regular Red Line service will run every 10 minutes downtown and every 20 minutes on the Braintree and Ashmont branches. Red Line stations will remain open, but entrances at Russel Street at Alewife, Holland Street at Davis, and Church Street at Harvard will be closed.
