This may strike people as a strange topic to be writing about but I beleive the fact that the Blood Libel -a heinous accusation levied at Jews in the 12th century- that still lives on today speaks to the danger and staying power of dissinformation. I fear it is a lesson in how long Donald Trump’s lies will be with us,
Donald Trump lies. He makes up information. He changes information to fit the story he wants to tell. He feeds conspiracy theories. And, he does all of this over and over until the lies become the truth for his followers. One might think that while this is not good for our system of governing, it will all go away at some point when he goes away. That is, he loses the election or becomes increasing discredited. Even if those things don’t happen, he is 77 years old and won’t live forever. At some point Donald Trump will no longer be actively involved in politics. But the damage he has done will likely live on for a long time and possibly a very, very long time.
The Blood Libel is a historical example of disinformation that has lived on for over 800 years. The Blood Libel dates back to the 12th century and grew out of the unsolved murder of a young boy in England, William of Norwich. William’s death was explained by the blood libel that alleges Jews’ sacrifice Christian children, such as William, at Passover to obtain blood for unleavened bread. This ridiculous, slanderous accusation was purposefully spread in the 12th century, at the time of the Crusades, feeding the anti-Semitic fever that gripped Europe. Different versions of the story circulated from time to time but that changed when Thomas of Monmouth, a monk, wrote account of the boy’s murder in stages between 1115 and 1173 in a book he called The Life and Miracles of St. William of Norwich. This account added many new gruesome details. Monmouth’s version of what happened paints the Jews as devils who torture and murder innocent Christian children. The uneducated people of the 12th century believed the story, in part, because Monmouth was a monk.
The Blood Libel is disinformation that has had legs that have lasted over 800 years. It was used by the Nazi’s in their propaganda. And, it is still out there living on the Internet and being cultivated by conspiracy theorists and other extremists to stoke Anti-Semitism at home.
The absurd Pizzagate conspiracy theory that accused Hillary Clinton and the Democrats of operating a child sex ring in the 2016 election appears to have gotten some of their ideas from the 12th century blood libel accusations.
Donald Trump’s lies and conspiracy theories are dangerous and are intended to inspire his followers to take illegal and violent actions. And, they will live on long after he has passed.
