Dr. Kevin Whitaker, Jamestown Public Schools superintendent, told district parents last week that the district has taken “immediate and serious action” in response to a bullying incident that made news recently.
That’s good to see, because too often children and their parents are being put in terrible situations.
Raquel Diaz brought the issue to the school board’s attention during its meeting Oct. 11 after her son, a Jamestown High School student, was harassed in an incident captured on video and widely shared on social media.
“I am demanding change, and I will continue to make noise until those higher than those of you who are present are listening to us parents,” she said.
While Whitaker, Jamestown schools superintendent, acknowledged what happened last week, he told The Post-Journal it’s part of a “months- and years-long, much more complicated situation.” He said JHS administrators have put a plan in place and have communicated with the families involved. What’s troubling is the length of time it appears this situation has festered. Whitaker himself says the incident between Diaz’ son and the other student is a complicated months- and years-long situation. School districts have to be fair to everyone involved, and the district is charged with educating even students who bully other students. But it’s hard to believe that a situation could fester this long if the district’s Code of Conduct was being followed.
Full details of the incident that brought Diaz to the school board will always be difficult to ascertain because of student privacy rules. That means only one side of the story has been told. But one thing, in our opinion, is clear — no child or parent should have to deal with a bullying situation that goes on for months or years. At some point, zero tolerance has to mean zero tolerance — or else the adults in the room lose all credibility with the children they are trying to educate.
