For patients with persistent arthritic pain that hasn’t responded to other treatment methods, Desert Pain provides radiofrequency ablation to help delay or avoid surgery. This type of pain is more common among patients over age 50 and is often exacerbated by standing, sitting up straight, doing household chores and participating in activities like golf.

Desert Pain has offered radiofrequency ablation since the clinic opened in 2007.

“Radiofrequency ablation was invented almost 90 years ago and has been used in pain medicine for decades,” interventional pain management specialist Dr. Nate Clements said. “There’s really good evidence in the clinical literature as far as effectively treating back pain.”

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic arthritis pain throughout the spine (neck, mid-back and low back) as well as the SI joint and knees, even if the patient has undergone knee replacement. It reduces pain by utilizing an electrical current from radio waves to heat and destroy the nerves that send pain signals to the brain.

The procedure is covered by Medicare and all major insurance providers. Before a patient undergoes radiofrequency ablation, a Desert Pain physician will consult with them to pinpoint the source of their pain.

Next, they perform a series of diagnostic tests, called medial branch blocks, to help identify the specific facet joints of the spine that are affected by arthritis and determine if the patient experiences significant relief from small injections of local anesthetic. If the patient responds well to these tests, they can move forward with the procedure.

Radiofrequency ablation is an outpatient procedure typically completed within 20 minutes at any of Desert Pain’s clinic locations. Light sedation is available and recommended to reduce discomfort.

During the procedure, specialized insulated needles are guided to the targeted treatment area using live X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy). A probe is then inserted into the needle. Low-frequency radio waves are run through the probe, which heats up the uninsulated tip of the needle to allow for very precise cauterization of the treatment area.

It may take four to six weeks for patients to experience maximum pain relief, as soft tissue surrounding the ablated nerves must heal. Expect soreness at the procedure site lasting a couple of weeks, Clements said. Patients may also experience a sunburn-like sensation around the procedure site due to the heat of the radiofrequency energy, although it’s not common.

Radiofrequency ablation provides long-term relief, allowing patients to get back to their usual routine and enjoy daily life with fewer limitations. Most people experience significant pain reduction for one or two years before the nerves eventually regenerate, at which point another ablation can be performed.

As with all other procedures the clinic performs, Desert Pain takes a patient-centric approach to radiofrequency ablation.

“We do our very best to consider the patient’s pain goals, what they want to accomplish physically and how invasive they want their procedures to be to determine the best treatment,” Clements said. “We really try to personalize the care we provide each patient.”
