"I was always impressed by his personal presence; he exuded dignity, but he also didn't come across as pompous or arrogant. He was friendly," retired Major General Marcia Anderson said.

Powell was a retired Army general and former secretary of state. He died on Monday. He was 84 years old.

Anderson said she was unsurprised to learn the statesman quietly fought his last battle with blood cancer, Parkinson's disease and COVID-19 complications.

"He didn't, you know, spend a lot of time talking about his, his personal health, but just kind of soldiered on it sounds kind of cliche. It's just a hallmark of who he was as a person," she said.

She said that Powell was a person she grew up admiring and tried to emulate during her years serving the country.

"I think people will follow you almost anywhere if... they believe that you care about them... And I think he was particularly good at that," Anderson said. "Until the very end, he was a person of integrity. He was going to tell the truth, no matter how some people received it well or not so well; he was not going to shy away from that and, above all, he was about the country, though he was going to put country above agenda above personal ambition, because he wanted to do the right thing for everybody."

Anderson said through the years, she attended a few dinners with Powell, but her favorite one was when a picture of two was taken during the Chicago Festival. She recalled how special it was to see Tom Brokaw interview Powell on stage, after she served as the warm-up act.
