1921 hurricane’s lasting impact on Lee County’s coast - NBC2 News

100 years ago Monday, a strong Category 3 hurricane made landfall near Tarpon Springs just north of the Tampa Bay-St. Petersburg area.

The storm left a tremendous trail of damage, and helped reshape some of the coastline of western Florida in places as far south as Lee County!

Since naming hurricanes didn’t become common practice until the 1950s, the storm is simply remembered in history as the 1921 Tampa Bay Hurricane. It is also sometimes referred to as the Tarpon Springs Hurricane because of where it made landfall.

Because it hit Florida from the Gulf of Mexico, onshore winds pushed a significant storm surge across coastal areas, particularly in Tampa Bay.

The storm surge water rise was between 9 and 11 feet along the eastern side of Hillsborough Bay, with 5 to 7 feet on the western coast of Pinellas County where St. Petersburg is. A surge of 6 to 10 feet would have occurred around Old Tampa Bay where today Interstate 275 connects St. Petersburg and Tampa.

The image below generated by the National Weather Service shows what the storm surge levels would have been pegged at given the storm’s strength and location.

The intense combination of wind and water rise also helped to reshape some of the coastline of Florida’s Gulf coast with the creation of at least two passes that are both still on the map today. In Lee County, the 1921 storm was responsible for carving out what today is called Redfish Pass, the slit of water connecting the Gulf of Mexico to Pine Island Sound just north of where today you’d find the South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island.

Hurricanes have a long history of reshaping the shoreline as they make landfall. More recently, Hurricane Charley and Michael also formed new passes along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline.
