Upset and angry over policemen killing George Floyd on May 25 and other blacks in the past, music executives Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang thought up an idea for music artists and businesses in their industry to protest racism and police brutality.
Their way to peacefully be heard while mourning and reflecting was to spearhead a #TheShowMustBePaused day for their industry on Tuesday, June 2.
“In response to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Abery and countless other Black citizens at the hands of police, #TheShowMustBePaused in an initiative created by two Black women in music in observance of the long-standing racism and inequality that exists from the boardroom to the boulevard,” Thomas and Agyemang wrote in part in a message on theshowmustbepaused.com. “We will not continue to conduct business as usual without regard for Black lives.
“Tuesday, June 2nd is meant to intentionally disrupt the work week. Monday suggests a long weekend and we can’t wait until Friday for change. It is a day to take a beat for an honest, reflective and productive conversation about what actions we need to collectively take to support the Black community.”
This message turned into #BlackoutTuesday, a day in which music people from around the globe are closing down shop for 24 hours and letting the world know with a simple message on their social media accounts.
Soon, this music-industry campaign spread into other walks of life, including the sports world as leagues, teams and players such as NBA superstars LeBron James and Stephen Curry, and Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton have been posting #BlackoutTuesday on their official Twitter and/or Instagram accounts.
