Beyoncé will receive a major honor at the upcoming 2020 BET Awards.
On Thursday (June 25), the network announced that the singer and BeyGOOD founder will be honored with the prestigious Humanitarian Award at the upcoming 20th annual BET Awards show, which will air on BET and CBS on Sunday (June 28) at 8 p.m. ET.
Furthermore, there are new additions to the event's star-studded roster, including a tribute to late Lakers star Kobe Bryant by Lil Wayne and a memorial to rock pioneer Little Richard by comedian/singer Wayne Brady. The BET Awards began handing out the Humanitarian honor in 2002 in order to honor celebrities who donate their time and money to charitable causes. To date honorees have included: Muhammad Ali, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Danny Glover, Denzel Washington and Pauletta Washington, Harry Belafonte, Don Cheadle, Quincy Jones, Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean, John Legend, Steve Harvey, Rev. Al Sharpton, Dwayne Wade, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Tom Joyner, Jesse Williams, Chance the Rapper, Naomi Wadler, Mamoudou Gassama, Justin Blackman, Shaun King, Anthony Borges and James Shaw Jr. and, in 2019, Nipsey Hussle.
The socially-distanced broadcast will also honor Nicolas Johnson, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz and D-Nice as the 2020 Shine a Light Honorees, which recognizes "exceptional resilience, ingenuity and creativity in the face of adversity."
French anti-racist activist Assa Traoré will be honored with the 2020 BET International Global Good award, which recognizes world acts who use their platform to social responsibility while demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of the global Black community.
The Amanda Seales-hosted show will also feature performances from Alicia Keys, Roddy Ricch, Chloe X Halle, DaBaby, Black Thought, Jay Rock, Karen Clark Sheard, Kierra Sheard, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Kane Brown, Megan Thee Stallion, Jahi, Nas, Public Enemy, Questlove, Rapsody, YG and Summer Walker.
BET Amplified Artists Masego and Lonr will also be on tap, with additional performances from D Smoke, Jonathan McReynolds, SiR and Usher. BET veterans Terrence J and Erica Ash will co-host the first interactive pre-show featuring celebrities, nominees and special guests on BET starting at 7 p.m. ET.
Celebrities on tap to appear include and reflect on social justice issues include: Congresswoman Maxine Waters, along with leading entertainers Billy Porter, Courtney B. Vance, Debbie Allen, Deon Cole, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, La La Anthony, Lena Waithe, Lizzo, Michael B. Jordan, Misty Copeland, Naomi Campbell, Omari Hardwick, Quavo, Quincy Jones, Rapsody, Regina Hall, Samuel L. Jackson, Saweetie, Sterling K. Brown, Viola Davis and Whoopi Goldberg.
