BTS Donated $1 Million to Black Lives Matter. Now Fans Are Trying to Match Their Donation. - Teen Vogue

As protests and petitions continue around the world to demand an end to police brutality and racism, many celebrities have stepped forward to join the cause — including BTS. On Friday, June 5, the K-pop group along with Big Hit Entertainment donated $1 million to the Black Lives Matter organization, and now ARMYs are rallying together to match the donation.

According to Variety, the donation was confirmed by a representative of Big Hit Entertainment. Although BTS and Big Hit have not commented any further on the donation, Kailee Scales, managing director for Black Lives Matter expressed the organization's appreciation in a statement to Variety. "Black people all over the world are in pain at this moment from the trauma of centuries of oppression," Scales's statement read. "We are moved by the generosity of BTS and allies all over the world who stand in solidarity in the fight for Black lives.”

Following the donation, ARMY members are attempting to #MatchAMillion, creating a hashtag that encourages fans to make a donation to Black Lives Matter. As of Sunday morning, June 7, the collective efforts had raised over an additional $500,000. The movement also sparked the involvement of the Beyhive, who encouraged followers to join the ARMY's donation efforts. One ARMY member even offered to donate for those that can't, pledging $1 for every like a tweet received, with a max donation of $300, and another pledged to temporarily give 100% of their Etsy store proceeds to BLM.

The online power and support of K-pop fans is nothing new. Earlier this week, fans flooded an app from Dallas Police that was created to allow for submissions of “illegal activities” and “evidence” related to protests, and BTS stans previously used their collective Internet powers to raise money for Coronavirus relief.
