The Rockets on Sunday issued a statement mourning the death of Houston native George Floyd that sparked protests around the country and pledged to “affect meaningful and lasting change.”
“We mourn for and are angered by the senseless death of a man raised in Houston’s third ward,” the statement posted on Twitter said. “Inexcusably, our Black community continues to be subject to racism, bigotry, prejudice and fear. This must end. All people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We condemn violence in all forms.
“As an organization, we are committed to working with our players, coaches, employees and community leaders to affect meaningful and lasting change.”
The post ended with a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Amid massive protests around the nation since Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis on Monday, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Saturday that George’s body would be returned to Houston for burial.
