BLANCHARD — Tim Webb has a lot of changes in his hectic life at the moment, including the arduous task of selling and buying a house amid a global pandemic, which he referred to as a “nightmare.”

“It’s pretty complicated to actually get in a house and look at it, which is a pain right now,” Webb said. “You have to virtually buy a house without ever seeing it or stepping inside it, which is insane.”

It’s the first step in a new life for Webb, who was approved by the Montabella Community Schools Board of Education on Monday as the school’s new varsity football coach. Webb takes over for Shaun Balhorn, who served 12 years as the head coach of the Mustangs between two different stints, coaching the previous six seasons.

Webb is a 1996 graduate of Whittemore-Prescott High School, where he played middle linebacker on the football team. He’d go onto play college football at Alma College before starting his rounds in the coaching world. He spent time as an assistant coach at East Jordan, varsity coach at Farwell, JV coach at Whittemore-Prescott and, most notably, was the varsity head coach at Tawas Area High School for the past 14 seasons, where he accumulated a record of 66-64, giving him the second-most coaching wins in the program’s history. Webb led Tawas to seven playoff appearances and eight winning seasons.

After announcing his resignation from Tawas’ football team, Webb wasn’t sure if he would get back into coaching or not, saying if he did, the situation would have to be perfect. Seeing the small-school size of Montabella, and being comfortable around the small-school atmosphere, Webb started to inquire about the position.

“I started calling around and I’ve got friends who coach in the area,” he said. “Nobody had anything negative to say about the school or the community or anything, everything was positive from these other guys. That was very attractive because if I was going to leave, it was going to be for the right situation … At every stage, we kept looking for reasons not to go and we never found one, we just really love the community and the administrators and the people I interviewed with and I’m really excited about getting going.”

Webb said his favorite part about coaching is building relationships with his players and having an impact on their lives. With that, he’s focused on leading a fun culture that helps players build positive memories and experiences.

“I just want to help provide the best experience possible for the kids,” he said. “We need to have fun and be involved in something meaningful, I think that’s really attractive to high school athletes. We’re going to put together a program that’s year-round, like most people’s programs, getting involved in community activities. We want to play tough and care about each other, that’s what I’m looking for out of the guys.”

Montabella Athletic Director Marty Weese said there were several capable candidates for the head coaching position but Webb ultimately separated himself from the pack.

“What stood out for us about Tim was his ability to relate to our athletes and his sense of calm, not to mention his experience as a varsity coach,” Weese said. “I am excited for his hire as I think he’ll build upon our culture. From an athletic standpoint, this is an important hire and I feel Coach Webb will be a fantastic addition to the Montabella family.”

As far as an offensive scheme, Webb said he’s run just about everything in his time with coaching but expects to run a double wing, unbalanced offense. Despite playing defense as a player, Webb calls himself more of an offensive guy, saying that playing middle linebacker provides him with a unique look at the offense.

“I have an idea of what I don’t want to see, what I don’t want to defend,” Webb said. “That’s how I try to approach it when I call games. As a middle linebacker, I don’t want to see pre-snap motion and I don’t want to see an unbalanced look because that means they already have an advantage pre-snap … We want to make the defense uncomfortable with our formations.”

Webb is firmly focused on providing a positive platform and making this season and beyond a good experience for the players, helping them to make lasting memories as high school football players. He’s set expectations high in the past and said it leads to disappointment more often than not.

“I don’t really set goals like winning leagues or winning state championships or anything like that,” he said. “What I’ve found is when I talk to grown men who play football now, they don’t talk about the league championships … They don’t remember if they went 8-1 or 7-2, it’s about the experiences along the way and that’s what sticks with guys.

“There’s only eight teams that are winning the state championship,” Webb continued. “If everyone has that as a goal and it’s a failure if you don’t do it, that’s a lot of failures and we put too much work into this to have that be a failure.”

Webb will also teach seventh- and eighth-grade social studies in the school district.
