Even with a foggy lens and less-than-ideal audio, it turns out it's still fun to watch Bill Murray just sit and be the enigmatic entertainer that he is.
Fans learned this much Friday afternoon when Murray and son Homer faced off against Guy Fieri and his son Hunter in the widely publicized "Nacho Average Showdown."
The virtual cooking event, a fundraiser for the Restaurant Employee Relief Fund, saw about 10K viewers raise nearly $11K during the hour-long livestream. The contest: The Murrays (Bill "coached" while Hunter, a chef, cooked in his Brooklyn restaurant) and the Fieris (Hunter was Guy's sous chef) were to make the most appealing nachos, as judged by Terry Crews and Shaquille O'Neal (because why not). Chef Carla Hall moderated the whole thing on the Food Network Facebook page.
Yes, melty nachos were made, but more importantly there was some very dry humor delivered by Bill. The proud dad spent the livestream at a table surrounded by booze (Tito's was one of the event's sponsors), giving his son unhelpful encouragement like, "I’m so proud of you, son ... You’ve gotten so tall, so intelligent ... When you were first born, I would speak to you, you wouldn’t even reply. I thought, is he ever going to make it?"
Bill also made this announcement to laughs: "Guy Fieri is a man who’s famous as a blond. And the real truth is, he’s a redhead."
O'Neal had a shtick, too, naming himself on the video call "sexier than terry," and proceeding to refer to himself as "S.T.T.," just because Crews was a fellow judge. Crews was fine with the nickname, and was fine with flexing his pecks throughout the competition.
So what was the winning dish?
Homer presented a beautiful plate that included beer-braised chicken from a wood-burning oven, his homemade "broccamole" (guacamole that uses broccoli instead of avocados), crema, radishes and jalapeño.
The Fieris created a giant tower of tostadas on a rod packed with mac and cheese, chicken nuggets with Tostito crumbs and green chile queso. "We have no idea how we're going to eat this monstrosity," Fieri laughed.
Crews submitted the first vote, and it was for the Fieri tower, because he called that nacho meal "a tentpole film" compared to Homer's "indie," and Crews considers himself "a big tentpole brother."
Shaq picked Homer's nachos because of a rule stipulation: "I signed on to a nacho competition. Guy is using tostada (instead of triangle nacho chips)."
Ultimately, Hill had to cast deciding vote. After much deliberation, she went with the Fieris' concoction. But no hard feelings.
Guy thanked the group, and especially Bill. "Without Bill signing on, no one was going to get involved with this hot mess," he said.
"Let's do this again when we're all together in one place," Bill proclaimed, toasting the livestream.
