Children are 'consumer goods' that bring you long-lasting returns, says top Chinese economist - The Telegraph

Children are “durable consumer goods” that can bring you long-lasting returns, a top Chinese economist has declared in a bid to boost the country’s falling birth rate

A video clip posted online shows a chief economist from the China International Economic Exchange Centre telling an audience that children were better value investments than anything you could buy.

“Children are long-term and durable consumer goods that can bring you long-term returns,” Chen Wenling said at an event in Southern Haikou City on Tuesday. “It is wrong for young people to not have children.”

Ms Chen also compared children to housing and cars: “Unlike stuff we purchased for basic daily necessities, they are immediate consumer goods. After you buy and use them, their consumption and use value enter the final point.”

But her comments instantly attracted criticism online.

'This kind of speech is dangerous'

“I don't want my children to be goods, I want them to be a person,” wrote one person on Weibo.

“Is there a possibility that in this generation we don’t have children because we know too well that children are long-term durable consumer goods?”

Another said: “This kind of speech is dangerous. Should those parents who gave birth to children with defects have to get rid of them?”

China is facing a growing demographic crisis caused by the country’s decades-long one-child policy.

China's population dropped by 850,000 in 2022

In 2022, there was just 6.77 births per 1,000 people in China, the lowest birth rate on record and down from 7.52 births in the previous year.

In 2022, China's population growth rate fell to its lowest level in six decades, declining by 850,000.

In January, Beijing reported a drop in its population for the first time since 1961, recording 850,000 less people in 2022 than in 2021.

Many proposals for boosting the low birth rate were submitted in China’s annual parliament meeting in March.

Suggestions included increasing paternity leave, allowing single women to freeze their eggs, and providing subsidies to families with a third child.
