Consumers Credit Union in Kalamazoo, Mich., celebrated March Madness with a new type of bracket: #MarchGoodness.

The initiative saw 16 charities competing for donations, with each round’s winners determined by votes on the official #MarchGoodness bracket.

“The world could use a little more goodness right now and Consumers is happy to bring it,” says Lynee Jarman-Johnson, chief marketing officer at the $2 billion asset credit union. “These charities are creating a lasting impact within their communities, and we are thrilled to facilitate such a fun way to honor them for their contributions.”

Voting began March 21, several days after the start of the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. Millions of people fill out tournament brackets each year, inspiring Consumers’ challenge.

The bracket’s final four consisted of Milestone Senior Services/Meals on Wheels, Mental Health Foundation/Be Nice, Special Olympics Michigan, and the National MS Society. Milestone Senior Services was voted the winner.

All 16 charities participating in #MarchGoodness received at least a $200 donation. The donation grew each time a charity advanced in the bracket.

Charities added another $300 to their total donations by reaching the quarterfinals, $500 for reaching the final four, $700 by reaching the championship, and $1,000 for winning the bracket.

Consumers Credit Union donated $10,000 over the course of the challenge.
