SPOKANE, Wash. — Texas head coach Chris Beard claims that in his two seasons as a young, junior college head coach, he used timeouts without compunction. Beard's tongue-in-cheek justifications for doing so included long, eight-hour bus rides home and a rush to get his players to an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet to chow down before closing time, he joked when analyzing his first loss as head coach of the Longhorns — an 86-74 defeat the No. 5 team in the Associated Press Top 25 suffered at the hands of No. 1-ranked Gonzaga at a raucous McCarthey Athletic Center on Saturday.
Beard, however, seemed dead serious when breaking down what he might’ve done differently to slow down Drew Timme, the 6-foot-10-inch All-American who made a strong argument to be considered the runaway early-season favorite for national player of the year honors with a career-high 37 points in the win. Of Timme’s 15 field goals (19 attempts), 12 were either dunks or layups on a night when the Bulldogs dominated in the paint (44 points to 22 for the Longhorns) and his 5-for-5 shooting start to the game — Timme scored 10 of Gonzaga’s (2-0) first 13 points — set the tone for a 54.9-percent first half from the field to help head coach Mark Few’s club dictate the terms of the game from the jump.
