Shot-by-shot, Dondre Johnson scrolls through photos of a life well-lived.
"I just feel like, when I look at these, happy moments, happy life," Johnson said.
He's talking about his aunt, 62-year-old Wanza Cole.
"She’ll make you laugh. Will have no anger in her body. Just a person you love to be around, for sure," he said.
Cole died Tuesday, when her car slammed into four vehicles that were stopped at a light on Western Boulevard. One other driver was injured. Raleigh police are still investigating.
"It’s just a shock right now for us," Johnson said.
In the day since the crash, tributes to Cole have poured in, especially from former students at West Cary Middle School. Taylor Dockery remembers her time at the school, where Cole was principal for more than a decade.
"She’s the only woman principal I’ve ever had," Dockery said. "And also a Black woman. And I think that was inspirational, being young and in middle school and seeing someone who looks like me in a place of authority and leadership."
But Cole also ended her career on a controversial note, taking Wake County Public Schools to court, alleging racial discrimination when she was transferred from her role as Principal of West Cary Middle to an administrative position.
That case was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court in 2021, but was ultimately rejected.
Cole spent the next two years enjoying retirement with her husband, Kenneth, before the crash Tuesday claimed her life.
Johnson hopes her legacy lives on.
"I just want people to remember my aunt as a historic Black woman," Johnson said.
