Peter John Crouse, a beloved resident of Broomfield, will be remembered as a loving, encouraging father and pillar of the community.

Among his accomplishments are practicing law in the railroad industry and estate business, service on the Broomfield City Council and being a talented tennis player and athlete. He was also a loving father of four and husband.

Crouse passed away peacefully in October. He was 90 years old.

Born in Pittsburgh, Crouse moved to Colorado to attend school at CU Boulder, eventually graduating from CU Law School in 1953. After a brief stint living in Tennessee, Crouse and his wife, Anne, and their children, Wendy, John, Susan and Peter, moved to Broomfield.

In Broomfield, the Crouse family had a positive impact on the entire community, from advocating for new tennis courts at the Broomfield Swim and Tennis Club to being founding members of the United Church of Broomfield.

Crouse’s wife, Anne, was also an important part of the Broomfield community. When she passed away in 2013, Anne Crouse Park was named in her honor due to her outstanding contributions to the nonprofit scene in the city.

In addition to being a core member of the community and one of the original few hundred citizens of Broomfield, Peter Crouse will be remembered as a loving and encouraging father.

“He was a good man, he was very encouraging to us children,” Crouse’s daughter, Wendy McAllister, remembers. “He instilled in us values of strong education, strong work ethic, we read the newspaper together every night. He encouraged civil discourse and civil debate at the dinner table.”

All four of Crouse’s children grew up playing sports at the encouragement of their father, who was an athlete his whole life. From football to pickleball, Crouse was always active, but tennis was where the whole family would shine.

In his professional life, Crouse was known as a kind and empathetic lawyer who always put his clients first.

“Some of his old law partners told us he always used to say ‘be hard on the law, but soft on the people,’” McAllister said. “He was very caring and ethical, always making sure everyone was cared for.

“Most people think of lawyers as wanting you to sue to get their buck, but he was never like that  … he really looked at it tenderly, and generally would counsel people not to go into legal action if he could,” McAllister said.

That attitude extended into his personal life, where Crouse remained helpful and tender. This showed when his son, Peter, started the beloved Broomfield pizza shop Infinitus Pie.

McAllister remembers her brother struggling at first, and their father was quick to help.

“He didn’t just help financially, he actually went down to the shop and would help him work,” she said.

Later in life, while living in an independent living facility, Crouse was remembered for his participation in many programs, including singing in a musical group and growing tomatoes in the gardens.

“There’s always more women in those places than men and he was the guy you could count on to dance with everyone,” McAllister said. “Not fancy dancing, but fun dancing.”

When they were young, the Crouse children remember having free reign of the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Their father instilled an adventurous spirit in all of them, and they would ride their bikes all around town. But the most vivid memories came from being called home.

Crouse was known throughout the neighborhood for bellowing his children’s names from the front porch at the end of long summer days spent exploring.

“One of my favorite memories is hearing his voice calling us home,” Crouse’s daughter, Susan Crouse, said.

Crouse’s memorial service will be held April 15 at the United Church of Broomfield at 11 a.m. The public is welcome and encouraged to join for the memorial and following luncheon to remember Crouse and his contributions to the community.
