West Orange’s Celestin snaps long-lasting N1G4 record in 100m hurdles - nj.com

She beat the heat.

West Orange senior Andree Celestin not only beat her competition in the 100-meter hurdles on her way to a Group 4 sectional record 13.89 at the NJSIAA North 1, Groups 1 and 4 meet in Clifton, but the hot weather as well.

She would conquer the 90-degree temperature going away, which added to her shock when she heard her winning time over the public address sound system.

“I wasn’t expecting to run that fast,” she said. “I thought the heat was going to fold me completely. I have to credit my coaches for the fact that I even did that. They get 90 percent of the credit. I’m so honored to hold the record now.”

While the thought of the weather was in the back of her mind, positive thoughts were in the forefront. She saw the heat as no excuse to turn in a race in which she didn’t give it 110 percent.

“The main thought in my head was that we’re all suffering in the heat together,” she said. “I’m suffering, but everyone else is also feeling the heat. There was no reason for me to not put my best effort in because everyone was feeling the same as me.”

Abigail Vital held West Orange’s previous event record with a 14.08, not far off the North 1, Group 4 sectional record of 14 flat that was set by Teaneck’s Karen Gaines in 1980. That’s right, Celestin shattered a mark that held true for 41 years.

With both records in Celestin’s name, Jason-Lamont Jackson is a proud head coach.

“Andree has been focused and we know she can run even faster,” he said. “The coaching staff has been amazing too. There are seven of us on staff and we get together and talk about the things we want her to accomplish. We’re really excited about these next few weeks for her.”

Celestin walked away with two additional medals, a second in the long jump and a third in the high jump. She was additionally fifth in the javelin.

The trouble for Jackson and company has been more so not being able to use her in five-plus events since she’s one of the team’s biggest point suppliers.

“She does a little bit of everything for us,” Jackson said. “She’s qualified in four events. Athletes like her don’t come around often, so us coaches share her a little bit. We probably could have used her in a relay or two if she didn’t do the maximum amount of events. I think she’s going to be a phenomenal multi-eventer wherever she chooses to go to college.”

Celestin tipped her cap to the coaches for developing her into the hurdler she is today, although she also takes pride in the practice days she has logged. Mental fortitude and a good cheering section helps as well.

“It’s practice,” she said. “I’m not typically a flat runner. The only running that I get is in my hurdles and jumps, so I did more flat stuff during practice this year. It’s also a lot of mental. I know I can do it, but my coaches and my teammates were motivating me.”

Along with her coaches and teammates, there was one more person in Celestin’s corner who may have been the difference maker in the historic day.

Her mom.

“She was standing near the fence during my race and between her and my coach, she was louder,” she said. “I told myself that I had to show out for her. Her presence definitely pushed that one out of me.”

TRACK AND FIELD: North 1 Groups 1 and 4 Sectional

Tiara Wilson of West Orange competes in the girls long jump at the North 1, Groups 1 and 4 Sectional in Clifton on Friday June 4, 2021John Jones | For NJ Advance Media

Between Celestin, junior Olivia Prescott, junior Kourtney Adams and senior Tiara Wilson, the Mountaineers racked up a whopping six medals in the field events.

Wilson had one of the three golds, a 37-6 in the triple jump followed by Adams with a second-place 34-10. She hit the number on her last jump and surprisingly unlike Celestin, she embraced the warm weather.

“It’s always the last jump when my adrenaline flows and I give it everything,” Wilson said. “I don’t like the rain, so I’m happy the triple jump was today and not yesterday. It was hot out there and I do my best in the heat.”

Prescott collected the other two golds – a 117-6 in today’s discus and a 39-2 ½ in yesterday’s shot put.

“I had a good performance in the shot put yesterday and I didn’t do my best in the discus but I’m glad I was able to advance,” she said. “I’ll just be making simple adjustments in practice ahead of groups and hopefully I can make the Meet of Champions after that. I’m just excited that I’m having a good season.”

When it comes to West Orange’s field core as a whole, Prescott loves what they do meet in and meet out. Could they be the best unit in the state?

“I think we are,” she said. “I know what my teammates are capable of, they know what they’re capable of, they know what I’m capable of and I know what I’m capable of. We have a solid team and we’re hoping for a ring this year.”
