Lasting implications for growth - Block Island Times

To the Editor,
From “Silas Marner,” written in 1861 by George Eliot: “The sense of security more frequently springs from habit than from conviction, and for this reason it often subsists after such change in the conditions as might have been expected to suggest alarm. The lapse of time during which a given event has not happened, is, in the logic of habit, constantly alleged as a reason why the event should never happen, even when the lapse of time is precisely the added condition which makes the event imminent.”

In recent discussions about the town potentially making water and sewer infrastructure improvements, I have not seen mentioned, as once was regularly cited, that Block Island has a sole-source aquifer without any backup. Whether one is a developer, conservationist, small business owner, resident, visitor or corporation, an isolated community with a compromised water system is not a place people can either live or visit. I would urge this fact be a primary consideration when discussing matters that may have lasting implications for the island’s continuing sustainability.
