Van Andel Institute founding research director George Vande Woude dies, leaves lasting legacy - MLive.com

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- An internationally known cancer scientist who helped launch and lead research at the Van Andel Institute has died.

George Vande Woude was 85.

Van Andel Institute Chairman and CEO David Van Andel talked about Vande Woude’s legacy and leadership in a letter on the VAI web site Tuesday, April 13.

He described him as a “towering figure” in the field of genomic cancer research.

Vande Woude was recruited as research director at the VAI in 1999 after a prestigious 28-year career with the National Cancer Institute. He was an expert in molecular oncology.

His research has led to important discoveries, and he is recognized for his work with MET, one of the highest and most frequently occurring gene products in tumors.

He stepped down from the VAI director role in 2009 but continued leadership with the center’s laboratory of molecular oncology as a distinguished scientific fellow and professor.

Van Andel said Vande Woude was an integral part of cultivating an experienced research staff at the VAI.

“George’s reputation and enthusiasm for VAI’s potential attracted young bright scientists from across the country. He nurtured a dynamic research environment that fostered growth and collaboration, laying the foundation for who we are today,” Van Andel wrote.

“Throughout the years, George’s profound intellect and wise counsel have been invaluable,” he wrote.

Van Andel said he had a knack for engaging others in conversation.

Vande Woude has been the recipient of several awards and honors.

In 2013, he was among an inaugural group of scientists named by the American Association for Cancer Research to its Fellows of the AACR Academy. The academy honors those who have made exceptional contributions to cancer research and cancer-related biomedical science.

In 2010, he was named the VAI’s Daniel Nathans Memorial Award winner. The award was created in 2000 in honor of Dr. Daniel Nathans, a Nobel Prize-winning geneticist and founding member of the institute’s advisory board who died of leukemia in 1999.
