Malcolm X Memorial Foundation leader speaks out for racial justice, equality - WOWT

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On the heels of a week that put police violence front and center, leaders within Omaha’s Black communities are pushing forward for lasting change with a focus on the positive.

“Unfortunately we’re predicting our actions on black death. And that’s kind of disheartening,” said Leo Louis II, Board President, Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, noting lasting change will come with lasting support.

“It’s encouraging to see people get up and move but it’s disheartening to see that’s what we have to do to get responses. To acknowledge the death of another black body.”

The Omaha Police body-cam video of the shooting death of Kenneth Jones was released just days after Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd.

“I don’t think you can stir the pot anymore than it’s already been stirred,” said Shomari Huggins, volunteer, Malcolm X Memorial Foundation.

The spotlight once again on the fight for racial justice and equality, and they’re working to make it last.

“If we just react on emotion with everything we see we’ll be kind of lost in that emotion,” said Huggins.

Louis says the lasting change means the focus needs to change.

“That would look like celebrating the successes of small organizations that are in this community doing good work,” he said. “There are a number of small black-led organizations doing good work and it would behoove us to find them. Seek them out. Put real support behind them,” said Louis II, noting it’s all about consistency.

“Truly get behind them. I’m not saying join them. I’m saying support them financially, support them with resources, speak highly of them, pass their name along,” said Louis. “Make sure that you believe in their mission and goals and then follow through on the support.”
