Younger Spuds hoping to leave a lasting legacy of their own | INFORUM - INFORUM

MOORHEAD -- For a 23rd straight season, Moorhead boys hockey will play for a Section 8AA championship with a showdown against Roseau on Thursday.

This year's version of the Spuds had a much more unpredictable feel, returning only a small fraction of the scoring from a powerful offensive attack last year.

"A lot of these guys moved up from youth ranks with a lot of success," said head coach Jon Ammerman. "Our JV team last year was extremely successful, and now it's their time, it's their opportunity."

The pressure to step in and continue a streak of playing for spots in state would be enough to make most players feel nerves. For a few players, however, they already know what those high stakes feel like.

"Leave a mark on your school, leave a mark on your team," said senior center Max Dronen.

From 2016-2018, Dronen watched his older brother, Parker, become a part of the streak.

"I was always around the rink and the coaches knew me and my brother told me a lot of things about what to expect coming to high school," he said. "All those games you watch, and you go to your youth practice and try to do what they did."

He's not alone. Players like Joe Gramer, Carson Triggs, Luke Leonard, and Grant Frisch have all had brothers in the last five seasons play for section titles and in state tournaments.

"I always looked up to my brother (Ethan), I always tried to follow in his footsteps," Grant said. "I think he just said you go to work hard. It really helps when you're coming in to do it yourself you have him to tell you what's going on."

They're proud of what their older brothers accomplished, but they want their own shot to leave a legacy.

"We don't need our older brothers to do it for us, we can do it ourselves too," Frisch said.

"Continuing the legacy of not only my family name but Moorhead hockey," Dronen said.
