Earlier in the day, the actor sent the internet into a flurry when he teased a possible title for the new webslinger superhero pic.
Tom Holland sat down with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday to talk about the upcoming Spider-Man movie, which became a trending topic earlier in the day after the actor was among several cast members who teased a possible title and sent the internet into a flurry.
'So excited to announce the new Spider-Man title," Holland wrote on his Instagram account along with a still. "Can’t wait for you lot to see what we have been up to. Love from Atlanta." The next photo contained the title, "Spider-Man Phone Home" in the classic font. The post received over 3 million likes, and some curious comments — including one from fellow star Zendaya, who wrote, "What the hell."
There was no mention of the actual title during Holland's appearance, though Fallon quizzed the actor on whether Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would have cameos in the movie, as is rumored. "It would be a miracle if they could have kept that from me," laughed Holland, clarifying that he's obviously read the script from beginning to end.
The movie is being shot in Atlanta on a stage where Holland originally auditioned for Spider-Man. The actor did reveal that his brother Harry has a cameo in the movie, which came about after he played the part of a drug dealing 'shaker kid' in Cherry. "We kind of had this idea that in every film I would be in, Harry would reprise his role as the shaker kid," said Holland. "So he is back again in his own sort of, MCU Cinematic Universe as the ecstasy dealing shaker kid."
The movie, from director Jon Watts — who helmed the previous Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home — is scheduled to release Dec. 17.
Speaking more about Cherry, Holland talked about why he wanted to do the crime drama project. "I needed to educate myself on the problem," said Holland, referencing the opioid epidemic. "I wanted to shed light on a problem that is on everybody’s doorstep."
Holland added, "I hope people can watch this film and feel more confident about opening up and seeking help."
He said that he lost 30 pounds for the movie, and then at one point the Russo brothers — co-directors of the film — flipped things on him and he had to lose some weight again after having put it back on. "I love the Russos and would do anything for them, but I genuinely thought they were going to kill me," laughed Holland.
Cherry releases in theaters Feb. 26 and on Apple TV+ March 12.
