The Senior Bowl was filled with buzz-worthy moments from the top seniors around the college football landscape. One player that stood out was Louisville Cardinals receiver Dez Fitzpatrick as he made a pair of impressive catches in the game.
Fitzpatrick made a terrific play along the sidelines in the game. He displayed his catch radius by high-pointing the football out of the air. Later, he showed terrific balance by getting both feet in bounds after hauling in a sideline pass.
Both plays showed NFL scouts his understanding of how to make plays in limited space. According to NFL Network draft analyst Bucky Brooks, Fitzpatrick was a player that really stood out among the senior receiver group.
“I am going to go with Dez Fitzpatrick just because of the way we saw him catch the ball,” Brooks said. “We saw him do a toe-drag swag catch on the sidelines and then come back to win a 50-50 ball along the boundary. Outstanding week of work for Dez Fitzpatrick.”
Fitzpatrick turned in his best collegiate performance in 2020. He recorded 43 catches for 833 yards and three touchdowns. He also averaged 19.4 yards per catch and shined in big conference games.
He had three 100-yard games against Boston College, Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky. The success continued in the Senior Bowl. Fitzpatrick had six catches for 90 yards in the Team National victory.
After the game, Fitzpatrick told reporters that he wanted to atone for some drops during the week. He made sure to put on his best performance on the biggest stage.
“I had a couple of drops that I'm pretty mad about with myself, but other than that I thought it was a pretty good day," Fitzpatrick told the media after the game.” . . . I showed a big guy my size can move in and out of the breaks.”
Fitzpatrick now has a chance to further impress NFL scouts at his pro day in the upcoming weeks. Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield believes that Fitzpatrick has the leadership and skills to make a sizeable difference at the next level. He recently said that Fitzpatrick has grown a lot in his tenure with the program.
“You guys probably look at the football side of it, but we look at the human being side of it,” told local reporters regarding Fitzpatrick. “And this past year for us, his leadership and being around our guys and just keeping everybody positive. He has a great spirit about him. He's one of these guys that's always upbeat with an outstanding smile. And that's going to carry him a long way, whatever he's going to do in his life. But he's a great football player too.”
How Fitzpatrick performs moving forward will decide where he lands with the NFL journey in the forefront.
