Prince Harry heartbreak: Stepping down as a senior royal left Duke ‘at a crossroads’ - Express

Royal Commentator Richard Fitzwilliams spoke to Express.co.uk about the struggles the Duke of Sussex has faced from the beginning of his marriage to the turning point he is at now amid the coronavirus pandemic. At the time of his engagement to Meghan Markle, the nation was supportive of the Duke’s new life with his wife-to-be, but a build-up of different factors force the royal couple to step down from their senior royal roles earlier this year.

In an unprecedented announcement released last January, Harry and Meghan revealed their intentions to become “financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen”.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “At the time of his engagement Prince Harry was enormously popular. He had a special place in the nation’s heart since Diana’s funeral.

“And, I think, this was a marriage that had tremendous promise, contrary to what has been written by some.

“The press at the time of the engagement and the wedding was tremendously enthusiastic.

“Naturally, he was protective of Meghan and there’s no doubt that one of the legacies of his mother’s tragic death is that he has an intense dislike of what he recalls as ‘media intrusion’.

“However, that the fact that in under two years, a marriage that had so much promise did not succeed until they had to not only step back but step down.

“That is deeply sad and I think there is a large number of reasons for it.

“One reason that has come out most particularly in recent months is that she was deeply unhappy with the royal life and what she regarded as its constraints.”

However, following their move to Los Angeles, the unexpected outbreak of a global pandemic meant that the couple had to postpone the launch of their upcoming projects, including their charitable organisation, Archewell.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “But Harry now is at a crossroads because it remains unclear precisely what his role is going to be.

“They are waiting for the end of the pandemic before launch Archewell, the non-profit charity organisation.

“But there is no doubt that this is very much her territory and this is where she feels happy.

“This is her home and also where her voiceovers, speaking and engagements are.

“She is on home ground. She is very happy.”

But the pandemic crisis meant that Prince Harry is facing the uncertainty of not knowing exactly when his next visit to Palace will be.

“There is no question Harry felt head-over-heels in love with Meghan but I think there is also no doubt that this is leading him to an area in his life that he thought he would never be in.

“The Queen is 94 and Prince Philip is 99 and because of the pandemic he will not see them for some time and it is unclear what the future holds for him.”
