James Vaughters Hopes to Make More Lasting Impression - Bear Maven

A team looking to fill in a spot on its roster for a reserve pass rusher could do much worse than the Bears' James Vaughters.

Vaughters comes from a family of college football players, including one who played in the NFL, and enters this Bears training camp with three games of regular-season NFL experience at age 27 after a meandering route out of Stanford.

Vaughter's roster chances could come down to whether he can continue to show good burst to the quarterback using some nice technique and how fast rookie fifth-round pass rusher Trevis Gipson develops.

The Bears had Vaughters active on game day last year three times and he had three tackles, but unlike some of the younger edge rushers they're looking at he is a known commodity.

Vaughters has been in or on the periphery of pro football since leaving Stanford in 2014, and last preseason saw what might have been his fourth and final shot at an NFL roster spot slipping away but did something about it.

In Bears preseason he dominated as a pass rusher, making three sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. It all earned the former CFL player nothing as he was cut before the season started, but he left an impression.

When the Bears needed a practice squad pass rusher they signed Vaughters back on board and he played in games against the Rams, Eagles and Lions, making two tackles in the Rams game.

Vaughters' NFL background started out with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and he made six preseason tackles but was cut and slated for practice squad duty. Then a torn left distal bicep tendon landed him on injured reserve. The Packers released him after an injury settlement.

In 2016 first the Patriots signed him, then let him go in May, and the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL signed him.

Three weeks later the San Diego Chargers wanted him at training camp so he went there and stuck around until the final roster cuts.

So it was on to the CFL for Vaughters and he used a nice blend of power and burst to accumulate 11 sacks over two seasons, and the Bears gave him a shot last year but cut him.

They cut him, put him on the practice squad, then signed him to the 53-man roster three times before he remained there through December.

With Khalil Mack's brother looking for a roster spot or a place on the practice squad to develop, Vaughters will be hard-pressed to retain his status and will need to show he's progressed beyond journeyman status.
