The Class of 2020 did not have the ending to their senior year that they had long envisioned.
The hallmarks of their senior year — Prom, the final day of school, graduation and much more — were either taken away or altered significantly. Feelings of loss and lack of closure are common among the senior class. They feel cheated.
In the midst of uncertainty created by a global pandemic and nationwide protests, it can be easy to focus on the negative. It has been a year fraught with challenges, uncertainties, worries and anxieties. This year has seen our way of life uprooted and our belief in normalcy shaken.
But, what if this year has a lesson to teach us all?
What if this year’s lessons change us for the better?
What if, when masks, social distancing and the coronavirus are a thing of the past, we emerge from this storm better people?
Every graduating class is unique, but this graduating class, the Class of 2020, is especially unique, having shared in an experience that no graduating class in recent memory has ever experienced.
High school graduates take a variety of paths after they’ve walked across the stage and received their diploma. Some head off to college, while others head straight into the workforce. Regardless of the path you’ve chosen and the path your life will take you on, always remember that you have a role to play in the world.
Your talents, your knowledge, your energy and your passion are vital in shaping the future of our community, our state, our country and our world.
Each day represents an opportunity to do good and to make a positive impact. Never let an opportunity to do what is right slip away.
The times we live in are historical yet also uncertain. We can never say for certain what the future will be like, especially in our current times. But, we can be certain of this: we all have something positive to give, and we are all capable of making a lasting impact.
