A lap around the track leaves a lasting memory - The Daily News Online

Students, parents, and even relatives anticipate the completion of high school since the start of Pre-K.

Graduation day is a day many look forward to and remember. It’s not just the completion of one long chapter in people’s lives, but the beginning of the next chapter besides. It’s a stepping stone, a symbol, and an honor.

While the global COVID-19 pandemic shut down schools and hindered graduation day across most of the world, some people wanted to step in and help create a memory for 2020 graduates.

The Bill France family, owners of the Daytona International Speedway, contacted Flagler Palm Coast High School (FPC), in Florida, and invited the senior class of almost 600 students to take part in a graduation ceremony they wouldn’t forget. FPC seniors and their families joined Matanzas High School seniors and families, of almost 300 students, at the speedway, May 31, as the graduation ceremony kicked off.

Among those graduating FPC seniors was Lacy McKampson, 18, of Flagler Co., Fla., who was joined by her cousin, Katie Mae Legg, of Pavilion, who is a 2020 graduate as well and wanted to support Lacy.

Lacy’s mother, Cynthia Adams Goldensuch, is an Alexander Central graduate, Class of ’81, currently living in Flagler Co., Fla. Katie’s parents, Chantel (Adams) Legg and Randy Legg, of Pavilion, headed down to Florida to participate in the ceremony with Katie so that Katie’s graduation could be special as well.

“Because of COVID, they weren’t going to do anything special. The president of the speedway lives in our county and heard the schools were trying to find a place to host graduation,” said Cynthia.

Led by the France family, NASCAR, and the team at Daytona International Speedway, graduates were invited to the speedway for the ceremony and allowed to bring only one car. Cynthia rented a 15-passenger van and invited her sister, Chantel; brother-in-law, Randy; graduating niece, Katie; and niece Carla Aceto, of Stafford, to come to down and support Lacy.

“It was epic. Unbelievable. They all love Lacy to pieces. She’s a little red-headed, lovable kid,” said Cynthia. “Lacy couldn’t drive the van so I told Katie if she wants to come down, she could drive the van around the track. This way both girls got to have their day.”

Lacy, who has down syndrome, was thrilled with the experience. She sat in the passenger seat of the van while her cousin, Katie, drove. Lacy was ecstatic to take the ride with her family and Katie had a big smile on her face the entire time.

Students and their families took their lap around the track after receiving their diplomas and before they moved their tassels from right to left. In true senior fashion, students celebrated their commencement by tossing their caps into the air upon receiving their recognition as graduates.

“Lacy is the best thing that ever happened to me. She’s a delight,” said Cynthia. “My father described her best when he said, ‘When she walks in the room, it’s like someone opened a window.’ She has such a big heart.”

She continued, “…We are so proud of our girls…”
