Sony Hints at PlayStation 5 Shortages Lasting Until 2022, At Least - Pure PlayStation

You’ve probably noticed that the Playstation 5 is an elusive beast. But if you were hoping things would be calming down soon, you’ll be disappointed to hear that is not the case. In fact, Sony sees this problem extending into 2022 – meaning a lot of us will be reliant on the Playstation 4 for a little longer yet. I can hear mine sobbing now…

Since its launch, the PlayStation 5 has been out of stock to all but the lucky few who have seen the ‘add to basket’ option. That’s not to say the company hasn’t sold an astonishing number of consoles – because they have. Just that a lot of units have wound up in the hands of those looking to make a profit on their acquisition. And on many more than just one console, at that. Still, you’re probably thinking that Sony would be getting a grip on production levels now as the pandemic lockdown starts to end. But you’d better think again.

That’s because Sony doesn’t think even upping production is enough to make up demand. So, 2022 could be more of the same.

The disappointing news came via Bloomberg, who quoted Hiroki Totoki (Chief Financial Officer) as saying that he doesn’t expect demand to die down in the latter half of 2021 and neither does he think an increase in production capability can change the shortage issue. Comments that will do nothing to calm the second-hand market, either. He also credited the demand to their dominance in the video games market, given around 100 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold in total.

At this rate, though, it’s going to take the PlayStation 5 some time to catch that record – even if it will inevitably beat it in the end.
