Hollywood is paying tribute to English theater, television and film star Diana Rigg, who died on Thursday at the age of 82.
The Emmy-, BAFTA-, and Tony award-winning actress began her career on the stage, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late 1950s just two years after making her stage debut — and a decade before crossing the pond to appear in her first Broadway production. In the intervening years, Rigg would also launch her decades-long film and TV career, appearing in a series of British and American television projects beginning in the '60s.
Starring in countless projects, the actress is well-known for her roles as the biting Olenna Tyrell in HBO's hit fantasy adaptation Game of Thrones, as Emma Peel in the ITV and ABC spy series The Avengers, and as Countess Teresa di Vicenzo opposite George Lazenby's James Bond in 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service. As Vicenzo, Rigg would cement herself in Bond history as the only woman to marry the famed British Secret Intelligence Service agent.
On Twitter, Baby Driver director Edgar Wright spoke about the experience of working with Rigg on her last film, the psychological horror Last Night in Soho. "What to say about Diana Rigg? I could talk about her incredible career, but for now I'll just say as a lifelong fan, it was beyond a thrill to work with her on her final film. She exceeded all my highest expectations, so blazingly talented, fiery & funny. Miss you already Dame D," Wright tweeted.
Rigg's Game of Thrones castmate Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wrote on Instagram, "She always raised the bar with her incredible talent, intelligence and wit" before describing her as "an absolute joy and honor to work with."
And in a longer Instagram post recalling his time with Rigg on their shared 007 film, former Bond actor George Lazenby spoke about the experience of working opposite someone who "undoubtedly raised my acting game." He then recalled fond memories of their journey together "as good friends" on the film's sets and the press tour, before acknowledging how Rigg's "depth of experience" helped him. "Much was made of our supposed differences but that was the Press looking for a news story. I was sorry to have lost my wife in the film at the end," Lazenby wrote. "The death of Contessa Teresa di Vincenzo Draco created a memorable cinema moment over 50 years ago. As my new bride, Tracy Bond, I wept for her loss. Now, upon hearing of Dame Diana's death, I weep again."
