Leon Bridges Hopes for a 'Sweeter' Future at 2020 Democratic National Convention - Billboard

During the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, Leon Bridges appeared to perform his single "Sweeter," in honor of George Floyd and the countless other lives lost to racial profiling and police brutality.

Perched on a rooftop overlooking a metropolitan area, Bridges and his band performed the mournful song, as the singer established his hope for a better feature through the moving lyrics. "Hoping for a life more sweeter, instead I’m just a story repeating," he crooned. "Why do I fear with skin dark as night? Can’t feel peace with those judging eyes."

The performance came just after George Floyd's brothers appeared to pay tribute to their late brother, and to call for justice and peace. "It's up to us to carry on the fight for justice — our actions will be their legacies," Floyd's brother Philonise said. "We must always find ourselves in what John Lewis called 'good trouble.'"

Bridges originally released the song following the death of Floyd and as the Black Lives Matter movement picked up steam around the country in June. The singer told Billboard that he had written the song a year before, and was sad to see that it was still relevant. "It’s a perpetual narrative ... but at the same time, I’m still optimistic because it’s been amazing to see everyone come together to fight for equality."

The 2020 Democratic National Convention, which is taking place online August 17 - August 20, will feature appearances and performances from stars like John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Billie Eilish & more. Check out the full first day stream of the Democratic National Convention below:
